Motorola V70 (2002)

About 15 years ago, Motorola, one of the first movers in the mobile phone industry created a unique designer. The mobile phone was rolled out for $400. It had rotating slider and options like GPS built in. Manufacturers thought it’d be a huge success and briefly it was. But as you know this design faded into obscurity very quickly.

Nokia 7600 (2003)

Nokia 7600 is one of the successful entries in this list. Unlike some other phones, 7600 didn’t fail spectacularly. It was quite popular back in the day. Largely thanks to interchangeable covers, unique shape and easy to carry size, even the camera was of good quality by standards at the time. But it had its flaws. Texting was particularly difficult.

Nokia N-Gage (2003)

Nokia attempted to create a phone particularly for gamers. It was Game Boy shaped device with a long screen in the center and buttons on either side. The phone was never going to work since it targeted a niche. Mobile phones as we know evolved to be an “all-in-one” device. No one wants a phone that you can play games on but texting is difficult.

Samsung Serene (2005)

Samsung Serene had a rotating keyboard in circle shape and a flip. It looked quite the sci-fi stuff back in the day. It was a result of joint venture between Samsung and a company called Bang & Olufsen. The starting price was $1275 which admittedly was expensive even with the modern design.

Nokia 7280 (2004)

Yep, Nokia again. They really didn’t give up on weird designs back in the day. This one Nokia 7280 was a stick like rectangular phone. It came in red and black colors with a screen that faded into mirror when it wasn’t active. 7280 was notoriously hard to operate and quickly died out.

BlackBerry Passport (2014)

Unlike other entries so far, BlackBerry Passport is actually a modern phone and is available in market today. This is actually a very clever design. With BlackBerry heavily reliant on its small loyal user base. They decided to combine the features of the classic phone and a modern smartphone. Result was this odd looking phone, perhaps the oddest one you can buy in the market today.

Samsung Juke (2007)

As you probably guessed it from its name, Samsung Juke was specially designed for music overs. Around the period of its release, many manufacturers were looking to target music lovers, we had W series from Sony Ericson as well. The most stand-out feature of Juke was its stick like long design and rotatable flip cover. It had a two 2GB storage space which was quite large at the time.

Monohm Runcible (2015)

This one is interesting, Mohohm’s unique phone Runcible is modelled after a pocket watch. It didn’t quite generate the hype that was expected from it, but something tells us that this idea isn’t done and dusted yet.

Runcible is a full fledge smartphone that is quite unique and beautiful. It would make any list of weird smartphones.

Haier P7 Pen Phone (2004)

Do you remember when Haier used to make mobile phones? Neither do I. Haier P7 was mobile phone that could write on a piece of paper, yes it was also a pen. More appropriately it was a pen that was also a mobile phone. It could do what a pen and phone can. It wasn’t very successful but one of the strangest phones ever made.

The Golden Buddha Phone (2009)

Chinese manufacturers create cheap affordable phones, right? Wrong. The Golden Buddha Phone was 24 karat gold plated phone that started at $1750. It had a round shape and had symbols and engraving related to Buddha and Buddhism.

Smartphone cameras have revolutionized the way we live. They capture all our important and mundane moments of our lives alike. We can make memories as we go along and store them permanently.

However, sometimes little adjustments in our smartphone cameras leaving us wanting.

Here are five fixes for common smartphone picture mistakes.

#1 Out of focus photos

It happens very often that when the person or subject you want to capture isn’t supposed to be the center of the image. When that happens, the camera often picks up another object in the background which is usually center of the shot and focuses on it. It turns your artistic picture into a disaster. The most common fix is to tap on the subject (in some phones tap twice) and the camera will start focusing on the subject.

#2 Blurry fast-action/sports shots

If you have ever tried to take photos of sportsmen in live action or an animal carelessly flying/moving about, more often than not the pictures of these fast moving objects will appear blur. There is a simple fix to this frustrating problem; raise the ISO setting. When the shutter speed is faster, it will be able to freeze the action more easily.

#3 Dark faces in bright shots

When your camera is set to Auto mode, it tries to unify the exposure to everything. That is why when you trying to shoot a person outdoors or with a backlit background, their faces appear dark in comparison to the background.

You can try turning your flash on, even when you are in an outdoor sunny setting. The flash will ensure that the face of the person is well-lit. This technique is called “Fill Flash”.

Next fix is to turn the HDR (High Dynamic Range) mode on. This will increase the size of your picture on disk but it will bring out details. It will merge the over and underexposed areas of a picture and produce a much more even result.

If neither of the above solutions is working, you can manually adjust the exposure.

#4 Dark, grainy low light shots

If you are shooting in a lower light setting, you would naturally increase exposure. This will result in an untidy, blurred and grainy photo. The two techniques we mentioned above can come in handy when you are taking low light shots.

First you can turn up the ISO setting that will allow the camera to focus best with the available light, Secondly, you can turn the HDR mode on which works the same way as explained when taking photos in bright areas. It will bring out details and give you the best possible result.

#5 Cluttered backgrounds

In the heat of a moment, sometimes when we click a picture we forget about the background. And wham! When the picture comes out, we realize that the background is not what we desired and it is too distracting.

If you are a Photoshop guru then fine, but if not, you can use a brilliant app. AfterFocus is a free app that allows you to pick a subject by tapping on it, and when you do, it intelligently blurs the rest of the picture. This way the background diminishes and the intended object comes into focus.
